What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a legal requirement under the Environment Act 2021. Most new developments in England must deliver at least a 10% net gain in biodiversity compared to the pre-development baseline.

Defra Biodiversity Metric 4.0 is the official government tool for measuring biodiversity in habitat units. It scores habitats based on type, area or length, condition, connectivity, and strategic significance.

How to use this calculator: Step 1 — enter all habitats present on site today (before development). Step 2 — enter all habitats proposed after development. Step 3 — review your net gain result and save.
